The first wall a child ever hits is not the one made of bricks, it is the one built at the dining table when the kitchen is dark.
Before the world teaches a boy how to bleed, his own house gives him the first cut.
You see, many adults grew up in places where the soup was sweet but the words were pure vinegar,
Where the people who gave you life were the same ones dropping the life out of your spirit.
We think the devil lives in the shrines, but sometimes he just sits on the tongue of an angry father after a hard day at work.
They will look at a boy who is just trying to find his feet and call him a waste,
Forgetting that when you tell a youth he is useless, you are already designing his youth-less future.
We are busy screaming about the system outside, but the real damage is the one happening indoors under the ceiling fan.
Mama named me Ségun Omo Baba Ìwásanmí, I am The Man With The Story,
And I have seen how a man can spend thirty years trying to wash off the dirt his mother’s mouth threw at him.
They tell you that words are just wind, that they blow away when the sun comes up,
But I know men who are forty, still crying like babies because of the name they called them when they were seven.
It is a dangerous thing when the home becomes a courtroom instead of a sanctuary,
When the people who are supposed to hold your hand are the ones pushing you into the fire.
They want the child to sing a beautiful melody tomorrow,
But today they are tuning the tongue with the wrong frequency.
You cannot use a curse to change the course of a man’s destiny,
Because what you release in the morning is the exact script they will perform when the night falls.
