I'll throw in *The Shadow King* by Maaza Mengiste. A novel about Ethiopian women fighters in WWII. It wrecked me in the best way realizing we had heroes who were erased because they were women and African.

For me it was *Born a Crime* by Trevor Noah. That book showed me the absurdity and resilience of apartheid through humor and a mom who refused to be broken. Completely shifted my view on South Africa.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's *Half of a Yellow Sun* did it for me. Suddenly I wasn't just learning about Biafra, I was smelling the dust, feeling the heartbreak, and understanding the complexity of a war I'd never been taught.

Growing up, the only Africa I saw in books was starving children and safaris. It took a library deep-dive as an adult to realize how much that narrative had been stolen from us. #africaheritage
