… Christian paused at the doorway, one hand resting on the frame. For a moment he just stood there. Somewhere inside his head a small voice rose up, gentle but stubborn. It sounded very much like his mother’s voice on those mornings she used to knock on his door before school.
Go back. Kneel down first.
Christian glanced at his wristwatch instead. 8:45 AM.
His heart skipped a little. Philosophy of Education started at nine, and Dr. Adebayo had the reputation of a prison warden. By 9:01 the door would be mentally locked, attendance taken, and latecomers left outside like forgotten luggage.
Christian sighed.
“I’m going Offline for now,” he murmured quietly, almost apologetically. “I’ll sync later. Noon, latest.”
Then he stepped outside.
The moment his feet touched the dusty path leading towards Y-block, something felt different. Not wrong exactly, but off. Like watching a movie with poor network. Everything still looked normal, the almond trees swaying slightly, students laughing as they passed, but the sharpness was gone. The colours looked duller, the sounds heavier. When he was properly Synced, the world always seemed clearer, almost brighter. Today it felt grainy, like a video playing on low resolution.
He brushed the thought away and branched at Y-block's entrance where he usually bought a sachet of water.
“Mama, give me one pure water,” he said, already reaching into his pocket.
The woman looked up at him, her face tight.
“No change o! If you no get fifty naira, abeg no come stress me this morning.”
To be continued… 🔥
