Let’s talk about the woman who fought at age 60 and lost a hand in battle, but never lost her cool.
THE LIONESS OF UHUD, NUSAYBAH BINT KA'AB.
Nusaybah bint Ka’ab (Umm 'Umarah)
The woman who literally shielded the Prophet with her own body.
🛡️ The Shield of Uhud: Nusaybah bint Ka’ab.
Most people know the Sahaba were brave, but Nusaybah (Radi Allahu Anha) was in a league of her own.
📜 BRIEF LIFE HISTORY
Nusaybah was from the Banu Najjar tribe in Madinah.
She was one of the first two women to pledge allegiance to the Prophet (SAW) at the Second Pledge of Aqaba. While she started the Battle of Uhud bringing water to the thirsty, she ended it as one of the most celebrated warriors in Islamic history.
She sustained 12 major wounds that day, including a deep gash to her shoulder that took a full year to heal. But here is the kicker: she didn't stop there. She went on to fight in the Battle of Hunayn and even the Battle of Yamama at the age of 60, where she lost her hand in combat but helped defeat the false prophet Musaylimah.
- She was a political pioneer: She was one of the few women who participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, showing her influence in both war and diplomacy.
- The Reason for a Revelation: It is narrated that she asked the Prophet why the Quran mostly addressed men. Shortly after, Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35) was revealed, explicitly mentioning "the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women...affirming their spiritual equality forever.
- The Ultimate Dua: During the heat of battle at Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to make her and her family his companions in Paradise. She famously replied that after hearing that dua, no calamity in this world could ever bother her again.
LESSONS
🌸 She taught us Action Over Observation: She didn’t wait for permission to be useful; when she saw a need (the Prophet being unprotected), she stepped up immediately.
🌸 She's a definition of one who gives her all to an Ageless Ambition: Losing a hand at age 60 didn't make her "retire" from her principles. She proved that your impact isn't limited by your age or gender.
🌸 Intellectual Courage: She wasn't afraid to ask "Why?" (as seen with her question about the Quranic verses), leading to a revelation that benefits billions of people today.
