The final brushstroke is always the scariest.
Because before you make it, the painting is still becoming. After you make it, it is finished. And finished means you have to let it be what it is instead of what you hoped it would be.
These two are my neighbor's children. They play in the rain every time it falls and their mother calls them inside and they pretend not to hear and she pretends to be angry and everyone is happy.
I painted the rain first. Then the coats. Then the splash. The faces came last because faces are where paintings live or die and I needed the rest of the canvas to be ready to hold them.
Oil on canvas. 40 x 50. Five weeks.
The rain took three days. The joy took all of them.
