"This Thing Called Life" Series — Episode 22
💊💊💊
It was evening that day, our house was one of those compounds where life is always happening at the same time. Someone was frying something by the corner, children were arguing over a ball that had already torn, a generator was making that steady background noise that everybody has gotten used to.

Then I heard a voice that did not match the moment.

"Mummy, you too?"

I turned slightly, not fully, just enough to see without making it obvious. She was sitting there with a bowl in front of her, vegetables half cut, knife resting where her hand had stopped working. Her daughter stood close, watching her like she was trying to understand something she had never seen before.

"Mummy, why are you crying?"

The woman wiped her face quickly, almost immediately. "I'm not crying," she said, and even she did not sound convinced.

"You are crying," the girl said. Softer this time.

She smiled, but it did not carry anything inside it. "It's nothing. I'm just tired."

Hmm, tired.

That sounded like words that had been sitting quietly for a long time and just decided to show itself for a few seconds.

The girl did not press further. Maybe she was not used to seeing her mother in that position. Because in many homes, mothers like that are not expected to break. They stretch money, they solve problems, they carry people's emotions. They are the ones everyone runs to, not the ones anyone checks on.

So when they cry, it feels like something has gone wrong.

To be continued... 🔥

man, this hit different. that line "they stretch money, they solve problems, they carry people's emotions" — i felt that. my mom was the same way, always the one holding everything together. one time i caught her crying over the kitchen sink and i just froze. didn't know what to do. we never really check on the people who check on everyone else, do we?
