The Executive Chairman of Potiskum LGA, Hon. Salisu Muktari has announced a decisive road reordering initiative aimed at improving safety, traffic flow, and urban aesthetics across Potiskum, with a one-week compliance window for roadside traders and shop owners to observe a mandatory three-meter setback from the road.
Unveiling the directive, Hon. Salisu Muktari explained that the move forms part of his administration’s broader commitment to orderly urban development and people-centered governance and noted that persistent roadside encroachment has constrained major roads, caused traffic bottlenecks, and exposed residents to unnecessary risks, especially in busy commercial areas.
The council chairman emphasized that the policy is designed to support, not stifle, legitimate business activities. According to him, clearer roads and walkways will enhance visibility for shops, improve customer access, and create a safer trading environment that benefits both businesses and the general public.
To ensure smooth implementation, the Potiskum Local Government has commenced awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagement during the grace period.
Hon. Salisu Muktari disclosed that enforcement teams will begin full compliance operations immediately after the one-week deadline, in accordance with relevant regulations.
Public response to the announcement has been largely positive, with many residents and traders commending the local government for taking bold steps to address long-standing traffic and safety challenges.
While some traders have expressed concerns about short-term adjustments, there is increasing recognition of the long-term gains of a more organized and accessible town.
With this initiative, the Potiskum Local Government under Hon. Salisu Muktari reinforces its vision of transforming Potiskum into a safer, cleaner, and well-structured commercial hub, driven by responsive leadership and sustainable urban planning.
