It started with a small argument that was not supposed to become anything serious.
Two friends stood by the roadside, their voices rising slowly, not shouting yet, but already sharp enough to draw attention.
“I did exactly what they said,” one of them kept insisting.
“Exactly,” the other replied. “That is the problem. You did what they said, not what you were meant to do.”
I was not part of the conversation, but you know how some words refuse to mind their business. They enter your ear and sit down.
I kept walking, but that word was walking with me.
You did what they said, not what you were meant to do.
It sounded simple at first. Almost harmless. But the more I thought about it, the more it refused to leave.
Later that day, I entered a small shop to buy something. The woman there was arguing with her apprentice.
“I told you to arrange these goods,” she said.
“I arranged them now,” the girl replied, almost offended.
The woman pointed at the shelf. “Is this arrangement? I said arrange, not just move things from one place to another.”
The girl went quiet. And again, that same thought returned.
Obedience is not always accuracy. Someone can follow instructions and still miss intention. I began to connect the dot.
A student reads all night, attends every class, submits every assignment, but deep down, there is no growth. Just movement. Just activity. If you ask questions outside what was taught, everything becomes blank.
