In the quiet of what remains

It all passed by in a blur,
The days, the weeks, the years.
I thought time would heal,
That maybe, just maybe, it would teach my heart to stop loving you.
But little did I know,
You had taken root within me far too deep,
Even I couldn’t tear you out.
We never ended well.
We never found our way back to each other.
Yet, my heart’s image of you never changed.
Somewhere within, I always knew you were rare,
A kind the world doesn’t make twice.
Yes, you broke me.
Yes, the tears came because of you.
Yes, the weight of it all drew me to the edge.
I tried everything to keep you,
But it wasn’t enough.
Or perhaps, I simply wasn’t the one meant for you.
Still, even apart, your existence brings me a quiet joy I cannot explain.
Whenever I pick up my pen,
Your name bleeds through every line I write.
Sometimes, I visit your pages in silence,
Stealing glances at your photographs I stole,
Not with hope that you’ll return,
But just to see your face again,
Even if it’s only through the glow of a screen.
They say unrequited love destroys,
But my dear,
The one-sided love I hold for you brings a strange kind of peace.
A calm no other source could ever give.
They say if you truly love someone,
You must let them go
When their heart no longer beats for you.
And so, I did.
Not because I stopped loving you,
Not because you stopped meaning something to me,
But because you no longer found happiness by my side.
You never said the words,
Your silence spoke them all.
And so, I’ll keep praying for you, my love.
That you find the one
Who will bring you the joy
I never could.
