Yobe State Governor, Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni, CON (Chiroman Gujba), on Wednesday led a solemn and symbolic state ceremony to honor Nigeria’s fallen servicemen and women during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Wreath-Laying Ceremony held in Damaturu, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to consolidate peace and security across the state.

The ceremony, which marked the climax of activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Yobe State, took place at the Events Centre, Government House, Damaturu. It attracted top government functionaries, members of the State Executive Council, legislators, security chiefs, traditional rulers, the Nigerian Legion, and families of fallen heroes.

Special prayers were offered by Christian and Muslim military clerics for the repose of the souls of fallen officers and men and for enduring peace, unity, and stability in Yobe State and the country at large.

In his address, Governor Buni paid glowing tribute to members of the Armed Forces who paid the supreme sacrifice in defense of Nigeria, particularly in the battle against insurgency in the Northeast and other security operations nationwide. He stressed that their bravery and patriotism remain a constant reminder of the cost of peace and the collective responsibility of leadership and citizens to protect it.

The wreath-laying ceremony was jointly performed by the governor alongside the honorable speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, the chief judge of Yobe State, the commander of Sector II of Operation Hadin Kai, the commissioner of police of the Yobe State Command, the director of the Department of State Services, His Royal Highness the Emir of Fika and chairman of the Yobe State Council of Chiefs, the chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Yobe State, and a representative of widows of fallen heroes.

In a symbolic gesture reflecting hope and unity, Governor Buni released white pigeons to signify peace, reconciliation, and national cohesion.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of an allocation letter for a parcel of land donated by the Yobe State Government to the Armed Forces Casualty Trust Fund for the development of a Veterans Estate in Damaturu. The letter was presented to the Chairman of the Trust Fund, Hon. Moses Essien.

It will be recalled that Governor Buni had earlier approved a ₦30 million donation to the Yobe State chapter of the Nigerian Legion during the emblem appeal fund launch. He further demonstrated his personal commitment to the welfare of veterans and their families by making an additional donation of ₦5 million at the ceremony.

The ceremony, which combined solemn remembrance with strong governance messaging on security and social responsibility.
