The longest walk of his life
was not the battlefield.
It was forty-two steps down a stone aisle
with his daughter's hand in the crook
of the same arm that carried her at two,
caught her at seven,
and held her mother's coffin at forty-one.
His medals could not prepare him for this.
When he lifted the veil,
his hands shook in a way
combat never made them shake.
She looked up at him
and he saw her mother's eyes
giving him permission to let go.
He didn't.
Not fully.
Not ever.

man this got me right in the feels. My dad was military too and he cried harder at my wedding than he did at any deployment goodbye.
