Your Book Idea Is Not The Problem

You know something that used to surprise me? Somebody can sit beside a bus window for thirty minutes and come down with five story ideas. Another person can stay inside the same bus for the same thirty minutes and come down with only transport fare headache and sweat. Shebi nah the same bus, same road, same potholes, how did they now have completely different experiences?. I told you all on Monday that ideas are everywhere, buses, family meetings, market noise, random conversations, day to day life. Idea nah water 😂 The problem is almost never "I don't have an idea." That one rarely happens.
Even this new month is another idea 🤗.
The real wahala usually starts after the excitement. You get one beautiful idea and suddenly you're already seeing the full thriller novel in your head. You can picture chapter one, chapter ten, even the emotional ending where readers will hold their chest and stare at the wall for two minutes. Then you open your laptop and two days later, that same idea that looked like it came from heaven is now sitting in one corner looking lost and confused, like it entered the wrong house. Aunty, don't lie oo, doesn't it happen to you?
Good ideas are a lot like houses. Nobody pours roofing sheets in the air and prays for a building to appear underneath. There are pillars first. Bones holding things together in places people cannot even see. That invisible structure is what separates a story that stands from a story that keeps falling apart every time the writer tries to continue it. And building that kind of structure is a skill, one that develops over time, partly through reading the right things carefully, and partly through working with someone who already knows where the bones are supposed to go.
Some people are still searching for a better idea while a very good one is already sitting inside their head waiting for somebody to give it bones.
