LAND OF HEROES

Sing on Africa
Land of heroes who wrestled
from dawn to dusk at the village square
where ancestors meet with spirits from a distant land

Warriors girded in animal skins
Listen to their songs call
Our ancestors must not in their graves turn
if we at the sight of their bullets run

Our crime is our smooth, shiny, dark ebony skin
warm and fragrant like the morning brew
But their hearts are black and consumed by spite
like an abyss they swallowed hope and left despair

These heroes laughed at the face of danger as they clattered their brandishing swords
with their sticks and clubs
all the way singing their war song
Our ancestors must not in their graves turn
if we at the sight of their bullets run

And now ye land of Africa hear
The labour of our heroes past
shall never be in vain
Sing on Africa
Freedom bought with blood must survive the tyrants sticks and clubs
