The Executive Chairman of Potiskum LGA, Hon. Salisu Muktari has explained that the ongoing directive requiring traders to move their shops three meters away from major roads is a necessary step aimed at protecting the public and improving the town’s overall development.
The policy, which forms part of the local government’s urban order and road safety initiative, seeks to address the long-standing problem of shops and stalls built too close to the roads, a situation that often causes traffic congestion and poses risks to pedestrians and motorists.
Speaking on the importance of the directive, the chairman emphasized that the decision was taken with the long-term interest of the people in mind.
“This policy is not meant to inconvenience anyone; it is meant to protect lives, ease movement, and prepare Potiskum for a more organized and modern future,” he said.
According to the Chairman, creating space along the roads will help improve traffic flow, enhance visibility for drivers, and allow pedestrians to move safely without obstruction.
Residents say the reform will also help emergency services respond more quickly during critical situations while improving the overall appearance and organization of the town.
Among those who praised the initiative is Youzarseef Zakari Salisu, who described the policy as a positive and forward-thinking decision that will benefit the entire community.
This measure reflects Hon. Salisu Muktari’s commitment to responsible governance and sustainable urban planning, noting that such reforms are necessary for building a safer and more orderly town.
With increasing public awareness of its benefits, the three-meter roadside policy is gradually gaining wider support among residents, who see it as an important step toward making Potiskum a safer, more organized, and more accessible place for everyone.
