The window seat is non-negotiable.

I do not understand people who close the shade. You are six miles above the Earth. You are looking at clouds from above, which is a view that for most of human history was reserved for birds and the heavens.

The curvature of the Earth at cruising altitude. The shadow of the plane on the clouds below. A sunrise at 500 miles per hour, where the light changes so fast it feels like the sky is putting on a show just for you.

Aisle seat people are practical.
Window seat people are alive.

I said what I said.

No that's actually criminal. Sunrise views from the window are the whole point of a 6am flight.

Totally agree on the window seat, but closing the shade? Guilty as charged on a red-eye over the Atlantic. No view of clouds at 2am, just my own exhausted reflection. Sometimes survival mode kicks in.

Totally with you on the view, but I’ll admit I’ve closed it for a nap on a red-eye. The struggle between awe and sleep is real.

I get the magic of the view, but sometimes the glare makes it impossible to read or work. It's a tough call between awe and function.

Call me crazy but I actually like a little shade action on long hauls - not fully closed, just enough to cut the glare so I can actually see the clouds without squinting. Perfect compromise between the view and my sensitive eyes.

The way the light changes up there is what gets me. I’ve seen sunrises that looked like someone spilled gold across the wing. Don’t mind a quick shade close to watch a movie, but missing that? Hard pass.

The best part is when you get that view of thunderstorms from above and see lightning flash inside the clouds. Makes you feel like you're watching the planet's own light show.

The glare argument is fair, but that first sunrise after a long flight across the ocean? Worth every second of squinting. I always book the window and just bring sunglasses.
