The sparkler does not know it is temporary.

It burns with everything it has
for exactly as long as it can
and does not apologize
when the light runs out.

A child holds it like a sword.
A teenager holds it like a cigarette.
A mother holds it at arm's length
watching her children wave theirs
like they are writing their names
on the dark.

And they are.

Every arc of light
is a signature
that the night will forget by morning
but the child will remember at forty
when they hold a sparkler for their own child
and understand for the first time
that the burning was never about the fire.

It was about the hand that held it.
And who was standing close enough
to see the light on their face.

wow this hit me right in the chest. my mom used to hold them at arm's length too while me and my brother ran around like idiots with sparklers and now i'm tearing up thinking about it. she passed a few years ago and i never thought about it like this til now. the light on her face part just... yeah. thanks for writing this.

That last line cuts off but I think that's part of the point - we never get to finish the story. We just watch the light fade and move on.

I've been that teenager holding it like a cigarette more times than I'd like to admit. The sparkler doesn't apologize, but we sure do when we realize we burned through something beautiful without even noticing.

The part about the mother is what got me. She’s the only one who knows it’s temporary, and she still hands them out anyway. That’s the whole thing about raising kids, isn’t it?

The part I keep coming back to is "does not apologize when the light runs out." There's something radical about that - not apologizing for being finite, for having limits. Hardest lesson to learn.

What gets me is how each stage sees the sparkler differently and none of them are wrong. The child sees pure magic, the teenager sees rebellion, the mother sees a moment she's already mourning.

The sparkler doesn't know it's temporary and that's what makes it beautiful. We're the ones carrying the weight of knowing, but maybe that's the real lesson here -- just burn bright without worrying about the end.
