THE DOOR OF NO RETURN. EPISODE 10: THE PRICE

To close the door forever, one person had to stay.
The door had already chosen.
It had chosen the moment Ada picked up the key.
The Visitor met them beneath the iroko tree at midnight, wearing Simi's face until it no longer needed to bother, and then it wore nothing at all, a shape the eye kept sliding helplessly off, the way water slides off a leaf that refuses to hold it.
"You already know the shape of this," it said, in a voice assembled from every voice Ile Aye had ever lost, layered together into something that made Ada's teeth ache. "You have read enough stories to know how doors work. Something goes in. Something comes out. The ledger balances. It always balances."
"Then balance it with you," Dele said, stepping in front of Ada with his fists already shaking, and the Visitor laughed with Bayo's laugh, with the Pastor's laugh, with a laugh Ada did not recognize and prayed she never would again.
"It was never going to be him," the Visitor said, almost gently, almost sadly, and that gentleness was somehow worse than any cruelty. "It was decided the moment she lifted her grandmother's key from that box. Some choices only look like choices while you are standing inside them. Behind you, they have already happened."
"Then I refuse it," Ada said, "retroactively," and for the first time something flickered across the Visitor's not quite face that might have been surprise, or might have been the first genuine fear it had felt in two hundred years.
"You cannot free three hundred people and pay no price. That has never once, in the history of this door, been how it works."
"I did not say I would pay no price." Ada's hands were shaking, but her voice was iron. "I said I refuse the one you already picked out for me like I was inventory on a shelf. You have run the same trade for two hundred years. One life bought to hold three hundred others down in the dark. That is not a lock. That is a business. And I am done being the currency you spend."
Behind her, the wall's bleeding had reached the two hundred and ninety ninth name. One remained.
The Visitor's shape widened at the edges, the way a bruise widens beneath skin, its calm slipping off like a coat it could no longer be bothered to wear. "You have no other currency, child. You have nothing left to bargain with."
"I have my grandmother's research," Ada said, chin lifted, refusing to let her voice crack even once. "And I have four days before this thing finishes eating your name off that wall too. And I have absolutely nothing left to lose talking to you like this. So get out of my way while I go find out whether you are lying to me."
For a long moment nothing moved. Not the Visitor. Not Dele. Not even the wind through the iroko's ancient leaves, as if the whole town were holding a breath it had held, unknowingly, for a hundred and sixty three years.
Then the Visitor smiled, not Simi's smile, not Bayo's, but something far older and hungrier underneath both of them, and stepped backward into the dark between the roots.
"Go and look, then," it said, almost tender, almost mocking. "I have all the time your door does not."
