No one auctioned the Potiskum vehicles that were burned in the protests for his own selfish reasons; government approval was obtained before the auction began
_Hon. Salisu Muktari's Aids Break the Silence.
Speaking on behalf of the Potiskum Local Government Executive Chairman, Hon. Salisu Muktari has refuted the false rumors circulating on social media that the local government executive chairman auctioned the vehicles that were burned during the 1st August 2024 protests for his own personal gain.
He also confirmed that no one auctioned the vehicles for his own gain but only to ensure the revival of areas that can improve the lives of the community and that the auction was done with the approval of the Yobe State Government and the vehicles auctioned were presented to traders for trading in front of the state government representatives at Potiskum Local Government Secretariat.
"On the orders of the Yobe State Ministry for Local Government, the auction of burnt vehicles destroyed by the 1st August protesters was held at the Potiskum Local Government Secretariat, which has given rise to baseless rumors that the Potiskum Local Government Chairman is auctioning the vehicles for his own personal gain.
"There is no law that directly empowers the local government chairman to execute the decision to auction government or public property without obtaining the approval of the ministry or bodies responsible for the auction, and accordingly, a special committee has been established in Nigeria to regulate the auction of damaged government properties.
"Just like in every government unit, state, federal, or local government, there is an auctioning committee that is responsible for auctioning off any type of damaged or dilapidated government property. Yobe State also has the Yobe State Auctioning and Accessing Committee.
"In fact, the auction of the Potiskum burnt and derelict vehicles was conducted to rebuild a part of the local government secretariat that was burnt by protesters, and the approval and consent of the Yobe State government was obtained before doing so, and the auction was officially held in front of the public, and the leaders of the Yobe State Auctioning And Accessing Committee led by Alh. Isa Adamu BBC." Ibrahim M. Nura Said,
He also confirmed that the local government executive chairman himself requested the state government to allow local government traders ('Yan Gwan-Gwan) to come out and compete at the auctioning legally so that they can benefit from the auction and not limit it to the government employees alone.
"Then if we look at the law, it gives everyone the opportunity to buy government properties that were auctioned, but the chairman asked the local government ministry to allow our local traders ('Yan Gwan-Gwan') to participate directly in a physical trading based on the system of ringing a bell to hear the price of each and then sell it to the one who has the highest price of money in front of everyone without leaving only government employees to do the bidding." He added,
