The class passed like fog. Words floated past him but refused to settle anywhere in his head. Dr. Adebayo’s voice moved steadily across the room, Whiteboard marker scribbling on the board, pages turning, students murmuring quietly. Christian tried to write but his pen kept pausing halfway through sentences. His mind drifted to the most useless places—random memories, old football highlights, even the chorus of an Afrobeat song he had not heard in years.
By the time the clock reached noon, he felt strangely tired, as if the day had already stretched too far.
He walked to the Lower Lecture Theatre (LLT) and sat on one of the long concrete benches under a wide tree. The shade felt cool against his skin. This time he decided he would finally sync properly.
He closed his eyes.
“Lord… I’m here now,” he whispered quietly. “Sorry for the delay. Just help me finish today well.”
Before the prayer could even settle in his chest, something buzzed.
His eyes opened.
The vibration was real this time. His actual phone was ringing in his hand.
His younger sister’s name flashed across the screen.
He answered.
“Broda Christian,” her voice came through broken with tears. “Maami collapsed this morning. They rushed her to the hospital. The doctors say they need to run tests… but they’re asking for deposit first. We don’t have enough money.”
