… A small group of students stood near the door. Among them was Funke, the one who always noticed when he posted something spiritual on the department group chats. The one who liked to tease him about becoming “Brother Christian.”
She waved when she saw him.
“Christian! You’re almost late,” she said, her eyes bright with excitement. “Did you see the update on the department group?”
He shook his head, still catching his breath.
“What update?”
“The exam,” she said. “They moved it forward. It’s next week now.”
Christian felt his chest drop.
He hadn’t checked the group chat. Not once that morning. Not even by accident. While others had been reading updates and sending reactions, he had been walking around campus with his mind somewhere else entirely.
A sudden urge to pray rose inside him, sharp and urgent. It was not the calm kind that grows slowly in the heart. This one came out of fear.
He closed his eyes where he stood and tried to push himself into connection.
Nothing.
A quiet notification blinked somewhere deep inside him.
Error: Connection Timed Out.

Christian pushed the warning aside like someone swiping away an annoying message.
He walked into the lecture hall.
