The Federal Government today restated its commitment to achieving the global target of ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 by transitioning the disease into a manageable, endemic condition through sustained treatment and prevention efforts.

The assurance was given by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako at the State House in Abuja during the national commemoration of the 2025 World AIDS Day.

Salako listed different initiatives adopted by the government including the investment of more than 300 billion naira to strengthen the HIV/AIDS response nationwide.

The minister explained that Nigeria increased domestic funding for HIV interventions to reduce dependency on foreign aid, with expanded local production of antiretroviral drugs and test kits improving national self-sufficiency and long-term sustainability.

According to him, HIV testing, counselling and treatment coverage has continued to expand, with about 1.6 million Nigerians currently on antiretroviral therapy out of an estimated 1.9 million people living with the virus nationwide.
