I've been to Trou aux Cerfs more times than I can count, and while everyone talks about the view (which is undeniably stunning), what I find really special is going there at different times of day. Most tourists hit it mid morning or late afternoon for the sunset. But if you can drag yourself out there just after sunrise on a clear day, you'll see something completely different. The light hits the crater in a way that makes the green look almost electric, and you can see all the way to the coast without that haze that builds up later. The air is fresh and cool, and there's hardly anyone around. I sat on one of the benches near the edge once with a thermos of coffee and just watched the island wake up. It felt like having the whole place to myself.

Also worth mentioning is the walking path that loops around the crater. It's not long, maybe a 15 minute stroll, but it gives you different angles of the crater itself and the surrounding towns. Curepipe can get pretty humid and rainy, but the breeze up there is almost constant, so it never feels as heavy. Just be careful with your phone or camera. I've seen more than one person get too caught up in the view and almost drop something over the edge.

One practical tip: there's a small parking area right at the entrance, and it's free. No ticket booths, no vendors harassing you. It's surprisingly low key for such a famous spot. If you time it right between tour bus waves, you can have a peaceful 20 minutes with the whole crater to yourself.
