I Have Not Forgotten

You think because I laugh with you now
the knife you buried in my back
has dissolved into my skin.

No
I still feel the metal
every time you speak.

I remember the nights you watched me drown
and called it teaching me a lesson.
The mornings you trampled my name
like dirt under your shoes
then smiled,
asking me to pass the salt.

I remember your silence
when they tore me apart.
You stood there,
arms folded,
as if loyalty was too expensive to spend.

And yes,
I have shaken your hand again.
I have sat at your table,
eaten from your plate,
listened to your laughter.

But beneath my nods and half-smiles
is a ledger carved in bone.

I do not hate you,
hate is too heavy to carry.
But forgiveness is not free,
and I am not giving discounts.

So talk,
laugh,
pretend we are fine
but understand this:
I am a living archive,
and you are still
in the chapter titled
Betrayal.
