Governor Mai Mala Buni has introduced a significant shift in Yobe State’s political trajectory by zoning the governorship position to Zone C, offering the region its first opportunity to produce a governor since the state’s creation in 1991.
For over three decades, the state’s leadership has largely been concentrated in Zone A, which has produced governors on six occasions. Zone B had a brief experience during the tenure of the late Mamman B. Ali, reflecting a long-standing pattern in the distribution of political leadership across the state.
The development is widely seen as a response to persistent calls for a fair power rotation system, particularly from stakeholders in Zones B and C who have long advocated for balanced representation across the state.
By opening the governorship space to Zone C, Gov. Buni is being credited with addressing historical imbalance while promoting inclusiveness and unity, the move signals a commitment to ensuring that every zone has a meaningful stake in the leadership and future direction of the state.
In line with this development, the governor has endorsed Baba Malam Wali, a former Secretary to the State Government and Walin Nguru, as his preferred successor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This decision could reshape Yobe’s political landscape by institutionalising a more equitable rotation of power while strengthening cohesion across its diverse regions.
As the state moves closer to the next electoral cycle, the zoning to Zone C is being viewed as a landmark step one that rebalances political representation and sets a new tone for inclusive governance in Yobe State.
