Democracy in Chains

Government of the people,
By the people, for the people—
Rule of the majority,
Bloodlines unchained,
No iron crowns forged in the forge of kin.

When she came to Nigeria,
She wore a radiant face,
Like a goddess of beauty
On an enchanted mountain.

Both young and old stood in awe,
Marvelling at her grace.
But soon, tribalism emerged—
With machetes,
Guns,
And hate.

Not to guard her,
But to wound her.
My country turned against her,
Like lepers cast aside—
Rejected, dejected, and slain.

You dare not raise a voice,
Even when your heart bleeds too;
For truth is now rebellion,
And silence has become virtue.
What a shame.

I fear democracy is doomed.
I fear my own kind—
Not our colour, but our minds,
That drift too often toward evil.

Power corrupts—
And absolute power, absolutely.
Now tyranny wears her garment,
Pretending to be free.

I bleed.
She bleeds.
Nigeria bleeds.

Nigeria has a fighting spirit. Hopefully, despite these rough times, they keep growing stronger.
