Johanna, where is the cervical orifice?”
That was one of the questions the doctor asked me during my first week in the Gynecology Emergency ward… and let’s just say my brain needed a few seconds to reboot. 😅
On our first day in the ward, I had the opportunity to assist while a doctor performed a vaginal examination on a patient. We prepared the necessary equipment — sterile gloves, cotton wool, antiseptic solution, speculum, and other materials needed for the procedure. The patient was asked to lie in the appropriate position(supine)while the doctor carefully carried out the examination.
But in the middle of everything, the doctor decided to turn the moment into a small teaching session. He started asking questions about the anatomy of the vagina, the cervical orifice, and other structures.
I answered some correctly… and some, well… let’s just say they weren’t exactly what he was expecting. 😂 Thankfully, he patiently corrected me and explained everything step by step.
Moments like that remind me that clinical posting is where the real learning happens. It’s where the things we read in textbooks suddenly become real-life experiences — sometimes with a little embarrassment, but always with a lot of growth.
It’s only Week 1, and I’m already learning so much. Nursing is truly a journey of learning, unlearning, and learning again.
I’d love to take you all along on this journey, so every Saturday I’ll be sharing a little update from my clinical posting experience.
Stay tuned… the ward stories are just beginning. 🩺✨
