Winding along the western edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, the Boteti River (sometimes spelled Botletle) is one of Botswana’s most dramatic stories of renewal. Once dry for years, the river has reclaimed its path, bringing life back to the parched salt pans and surrounding communities. As a key artery in the Okavango Delta’s outflow system, Boteti’s return has recharged ecosystems and transformed local tourism—especially in and around Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.

💧 A River Reborn
The Boteti once flowed year-round, but in the late 1990s, it dried up due to upstream water use and changing climate patterns. For over a decade, it stood still. Then, in 2009, the floodwaters began to reach it once more from the Okavango, gradually reviving a river that had almost vanished. Today, it flows strongly again, bringing hippos, crocodiles, and a sense of wild resilience to the Kalahari fringes.

🦓 What Makes Boteti Special

Great Zebra Migration: During the dry season (June to October), Botswana’s largest zebra and wildebeest migration heads to the river—one of Africa’s last great wildlife spectacles.

Predator Activity: Lions, leopards, and hyenas follow the herds, making for exhilarating game viewing.

Unique Setting: The river marks a contrast between arid salt pans and lush riverbanks—creating a rare, dual-ecosystem safari.

Cultural Importance: It remains central to surrounding communities, offering fishing, grazing, and spiritual significance.

🏞️ Activities and Attractions

Game Drives in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park: Especially fruitful along the Boteti Riverfront, where animals cluster in the dry season.

Boat Safaris (when water levels are high): From camps like Meno a Kwena, you can float alongside bathing elephants and fishing birds.

Guided Walks with San Trackers: Learn traditional survival skills and local ecology.

Cultural Encounters: Visit nearby villages such as Khumaga to understand how life is tied to the river’s flow.

📌 Visitor Tips

Best Time to Visit: June to October for the zebra migration; November to April for lush greenery and birdlife.

Access: Khumaga is the best base, accessible from Maun or Gweta. A 4x4 is necessary to cross the river ferry or access deeper routes.

Where to Stay: Meno a Kwena (cliffside lodge with epic river views), or campsites near Khumaga Gate.

Essentials: Pack binoculars, water, hat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.

🌊 The Boteti is more than just a waterway—it is a symbol of survival and rebirth in Botswana’s harshest landscapes. Watching elephants wade through its current or zebras trek across dry salt to reach its banks is witnessing nature’s unbreakable rhythm.
