After watching it I understand why.
After sitting with it for a week I understand it even more.
Sean Baker makes films about people the industry usually treats as subject matter rather than subjects. Anora - a young sex worker in Brooklyn - marries the son of a Russian oligarch on a whim. The marriage lasts long enough for his family to find out.
Mikey Madison as Anora is a revelation. She is not playing a trope or a tragedy. She is playing a person - quick and funny and adaptable and finally, in the film's extraordinary final moments, broken open by something she did not see coming.
The film's last scene is one of the most emotionally precise pieces of filmmaking in recent memory. It does not explain itself. It does not need to.
Baker trusts his audience. He trusts his actor. He trusts the character to be enough.
She is more than enough.
Rating: 9.5/10. The Palme d'Or was earned.
