A significant political realignment has emerged in Yobe State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as Senators Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan and Musa Mustapha formally announced their withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship contest, throwing their weight behind the party’s endorsed candidate.
The decisions follow a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Damaturu, convened by Governor Mai Mala Buni and the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, where party leaders agreed to adopt a consensus approach for the 2027 elections.
In his statement, Sen. Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan emphasized party supremacy and collective responsibility, noting that while political ambitions may differ, the unity and stability of the APC remain paramount. He urged his supporters across Yobe North to accept the party’s decision in good faith and mobilize for the success of all APC candidates.
Senator Mustapha, in a separate declaration, not only withdrew from the gubernatorial race but also ruled out contesting for the senatorial seat, pledging full support for Gov. Buni’s anticipated bid for the position. He reaffirmed his confidence in the leadership’s judgement and called on his supporters to align with the party’s direction.
Both senators endorsed Baba Malam Wali, the party’s preferred governorship candidate, describing the decision as a reflection of strategic consensus aimed at strengthening unity and electoral success.
This development is a calculated move to prevent internal fragmentation within the APC, while reinforcing cohesion ahead of a critical election cycle.
The withdrawals and endorsements are expected to reshape the political landscape in Yobe, with party leaders intensifying efforts to consolidate support and present a united front as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
