UNTANGLE AFRICA'S CHAINS, PLAYING MY PART

Mother Africa, she is favored amongst many mothers for she stands head and shoulders above them all flanked by her beautiful children; Savannah, Rainforest, Mediterranean and Desert
She is free, unchained from the shackles of the Western world, she whistles her song of freedom and tells the tales of her long gone days of slavery to her children
She is free but perpetually enslaved to tradition and society.
The Orishas still demand blood so she pays with the lives of her children
She pays with Misogyny
Misogyny as rich as the melanin in the skin of the beautiful Dinka and Nuer people of South Sudan
So rich that the value of a woman is buried underneath like the pharaohs of Egypt underneath the pyramids of Giza
She pays with Corruption
Corruption as black as the crude oil drilled in the waters of Nigeria
So black that it towers over truth like the Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
She pays with Witchcraft
Witchcraft as deep seated as the Mponeng gold mine of South Africa
Deep enough to swallow all the waters of the Nile in Egypt
She pays with religious fanatism
Fanatism as thick skinned as the hippos of Zambia
Never bowing to the rights of another, enslaved to the worship of their "one and only true god"
Still, she is a mother so her very blood cries against her own injustice upon her children. She hides her fear and anxiety well under her tales of whips and waves and ocean vessels but her heart continues to wail in agony; she wants to be free and this time, free indeed
So I play my part; the father who delights in his daughters and upholds them
The father whose sons are epitomes of truth, valor and honor
The mother whose daughters are not brood mares but visioneers and nurturers, the mother whose sons are not slave drivers but empaths and protectors
I play my part to build a place where women pour the oil, children bake the bread and men kindle the fire, a place where truth and justice dance together and peace is a happy onlooker, content to be a part of the owambe
I trade my every vice for virtue so I can watch the smile slowly return to the eyes of mother Africa
I stand as a single soldier lending my voice to the buried many
The first to chant the song of war, the one to bear the torch that shall burn the path that sets us apart and unchains Africa
