Like a traveller hurrying to catch a flight
So we glided through the hills
Giggling, gallons tied to our back
"Just fetch water and come back"
Mama shouted. I nod, you smile
The smile of mischief -

Do you remember? Dear Alice,
Ogwòkpedu, the big mango tree
Seated by the stream,
Laden with fruits yet forbidden
We sought her fruits for satisfaction
Her branches became the tower
Upon which we gazed and dreamed

A boy from the city asked
"What is that scar on your leg?"
I close my eyes, as nostalgia beckons
There, I see you
Face glistening in the moonlight
Beads of sweat racing down... We won
Our first Akpò game

This scar holds a tale
Of happy feet raising harmattan dust
Naked bodies dancing in the rain
Tiny voices chanting victory songs
You call it a scar
Yet all I see is a childhood star
