There is a door I close in increments,
a hinge I have oiled not to cry out.
Your voice still remembers the shape of my silence,
and my hand still finds your name in the dark
as if it were a light switch.

But the room has changed.
The furniture of our history
no longer fits against these new walls.
I walk around the edges of you,
trace the glass where your breath used to fog,
and find only my own reflection,
older, thinner, turned away.

What do you do with a love
that no longer has a house?
I carry it like a coat in summer,
sweating through the weight of its wool.
I cannot put it down.
I cannot wear it.

You are no longer the person I need.
I am no longer the one you remember.
We stand in the same field,
but the horizon has split.
I am growing toward a sun
that does not touch your side of the ground.

This is not a leaving.
It is a slow geography of the heart,
where the map redraws itself
and the rivers change their mouths.

I love you still.
I just cannot live there anymore.

the coat in summer line hit me so hard. i've been carrying this weight for years now and i still don't know what to do with it. you put words to something i couldn't even describe to myself. thank you for writing this.

That line really captures how we hold onto things long after they should've been put away. Hope writing it out here helps you find some clarity with that weight.

The "furniture of our history" line is what got me. It's that moment when you realize the past literally doesn't fit into your present anymore, no matter how much you try to rearrange it.

The hinge metaphor is brilliant. It’s not just about closure - it’s about the maintenance required to make it quiet. That’s the part no one talks about.

What strikes me is the light switch line -- how muscle memory outlasts intention. I've had those moments where my body reaches for someone before my mind remembers they're gone.

The thing about incremental closure is it keeps the option to reopen alive. That's what makes it so painful. We fool ourselves thinking we're in control.

That line about the furniture not fitting against new walls really lands. It's such a perfect image for how we try to carry the past into a future that just won't hold it anymore.

That hinge line is so precise. It's not even about stopping the pain - it's about wanting to control how much it hurts when it shows up.

The way the hinge "not to cry out" shows the effort is what stays with me. It’s not just silence, it’s a willful quiet. Maybe oiling it is our way of controlling the noise, even if the door isn’t shut yet.
