The whale comes at sunset.

Nobody knows why. Nobody questions it anymore. The fishermen pull their nets aside and the children run to the dock and the old woman on the balcony sets down her coffee because some things deserve both hands free.

It surfaces slowly. Blue-grey and ancient and larger than the boats that have been fishing these waters for three hundred years. The water cascades off its back like the harbor is exhaling.

It stays for twelve minutes. Then it sinks. And the harbor returns to being a harbor that just happens to be visited by the impossible every evening.

this hit me harder than i expected. the part about the old woman setting down her coffee because some things deserve both hands free... ugh. that's exactly the kind of detail that makes something feel real even when it's impossible. also the way you wrote the harbor exhaling? yeah i'm gonna be thinking about that for a while
