The Unseen Factors: What I Learned About Opportunities and Personal Growth

So one way or the other, I think I have started discovering about life, about probably what I would have done better if I was on the other end. While I probably lose out on most opportunities I should have gained as a young person thriving in the professional space, recent experiences have been eye-opening.
I was in a place of making a decision or selecting and employing a team for a certain purpose, and it dawned on me that I was envisioning myself in the place of the people I had options to select. What really dawned on me was that it painted a scenario where probably my name would have been mentioned in some certain rooms, and the reason why I didn't get that opportunity was because of a few things I didn't consider as a person.
This experience brought to reality the truth of why some opportunities passed me by. I had the opportunity to recommend somebody for a particular job, and trust me, this certain person fit the available skill set and professional skill set and also creative skill set for this job. However, after I made my selection and recommended the person I thought would fit perfectly, it finally dawned on me that the person I bypassed wasn't because they weren't good enough creatively or professionally, but because I needed something more - an emotional skill set.
It ranged from dressing, appearance, ethics, discretion, the ability to be very discrete, and also the ability to be organized. Seventy percent of the reason why I chose this person wasn't even because of his creative ability, but more of his personality. Now I understand why I got into some rooms and why I didn't get into others.
Being in a place of power and decision-making made me understand why some decisions were taken for me and some against me. It brought a reality check to me as a person, and I discovered a lot. Most times, it's not really about what you can offer or the result you can offer; it's more about who you are. There are certain skill sets or recommendations that might not come to you because of what you can offer, but because of your authentic personality. You have to strike a balance between both.
