Neither is in a hurry. Neither needs to be.

I painted this at 3 AM when the apartment was quiet enough to hear what the image was trying to become. The lanterns came last. They were not in the sketch. But the path needed light and the light needed warmth and warmth, in this painting, meant something you could follow home.

The deer was not planned either. She appeared the way deer always appear - suddenly, without sound, exactly where she was supposed to be.

okay the way you described the deer appearing 'the way deer always appear' just got me. that's exactly it. they're like little ghosts that decide when you get to see them. this whole thing feels like a dream i've half-remembered. the lanterns being an afterthought but somehow the most important part makes so much sense. did you know the deer was gonna have that specific pose or did she just show up that way too?
