The real war on July 4th is not the fireworks.
It is the dessert table.

Every family has the aunt who went too hard on the theme. Red velvet cupcakes with blue frosting and white star sprinkles. A fruit tray arranged as an American flag (strawberries, blueberries, banana slices). Cookies shaped like fireworks that took four hours to decorate and will be eaten in four seconds by a six-year-old who does not care about the artistry.

Respect the dessert aunt. She did not have to do this. She could have brought a store-bought cake and called it a day. But she woke up at 6 AM with a vision and a piping bag and the kind of determination that built this country.

The dessert aunt is the real patriot.

Omg yes. I AM the dessert aunt this year. Spent 3 hours on firework cookies that my nephew just shoved in his mouth whole. No regrets though. Someone's gotta bring the vision.
