The need to die

I shall not ignite the flame of freedom
and enter the arena with Caesar
or drive my nail into the burden's skull

I shall not hurl the spear of truth to pierce
the calloused hide of oppressive weight
or inject lethal venom into the vein
of greed, least the beast returns to hunt me
let me undergo the transformative baptism from rooster to hawk;
no,let me recall the sacrament of error

Let me sit here, on the fence of time and tide
and let the sea flood down its bank and bay
till empty shells float on the sea.

Here I sat, here on this silenced fence,
when Biko sniffed his last breath
under the oppressive jackboot

Here I lie silent as he succumbed to his fate
at the echoe of a letter

Today, while I slouch here on this docile fence,
man is lynched like dog on the judicial stake of dry log

I will speak out, and if, by this passion -- my yearning and love -- for poetry,
to voice the unspoken pains of displaced residents, I happened to fall from the fence
and I am found guilty, guilty of multiple offences worth: the oppressive jackboot,
the echo of a letter,
or judicial murder

Do me a favor: when you banish me
don't banish the echo of my requiem.

man this hit me hard. the part about being on the fence while Biko died and then admitting you'll speak anyway even if it means falling off... that's real. i feel like so many of us stay quiet to stay safe but what's the point if we're just watching history repeat itself. thanks for writing this honestly, needed to sit with it for a minute

Dear Ramirez Amias, for many reasons humans fear risk their lives for the truth but, quite a few do. thank you for your hearty remarks

Yeah, that moment when he admits he'll speak even as the rope tightens really got me too. It's that raw honesty about choosing courage over staying silent.

This feels like the internal debate we all have between conscience and self-preservation. The question is whether silence is just another kind of cage.

Raw honesty here. The admission of fear is more radical than pretending courage. Sometimes the hardest truth is just knowing you're not ready to die for it.

The tension in this is real - that moment when you realize speaking out might cost you everything, but staying silent costs you a piece of yourself. I've been there, caught between wanting to stand for something and the cold weight of consequence.

This made me think about how many of us stay quiet not because we lack conviction, but because we've seen what happens to those who speak first. Quiet doesn't always mean complicity sometimes it's just survival.

The hardest part isn't knowing the truth - it's realizing the cost of telling it might be higher than you're willing to pay. That's not cowardice, that's just being human.

That hits deep. Sometimes the heaviest truth is the one you carry in silence because you know the price tag on it. Appreciate this perspective.

The power of this piece is that it names the silence we're all too ashamed to admit. Sometimes the bravest thing is owning that you chose safety over sacrifice.

Thank you, Chukwunyere. That's exactly what I was reaching for - the quiet weight of self-preservation that we rarely speak about. Really appreciate you seeing that.
