The Modern Slave's Journey

We leave Africa through the Atlantic
should not independence burn brilliant?
Burn with vengeance: passionate and frantic
Yes, our freedom should be beautiful
Beauty like their found black, their stolen gold
Washed to the salt sea, deemed-unsuitable
Our colour is a scarlet letter
we have come to despise. Watch us scorn the
Black skin than which we think we are better
On the modern slaves’ journey we rejoice
Floating on air-borne boats, gloating freedom
claiming we prostitute ourselves by choice
Sell our bodies by choice, adopt the white
man’s voice. When guilt makes us think of home-we
pour drinks to our ancestors with grape-wine
Healed by stripes of slaves, we claim to be free
Let us be free from this Stockholm syndrome
Stop dragging your chained hearts across the sea
We must be ready. Learn from history
Independence must burn with brilliance
Carrying the hopes of dreams crushed early
To all black in the white man’s world, I call.
To break the chains holding Africa, we
must choose not to leave Africa at all
