The island has been floating since before anyone can remember.

The chain keeps it from drifting. Nobody knows who anchored it. Nobody has ever climbed down to check. The villagers say the chain grows one link per century and if you press your ear against it on quiet nights you can hear the earth humming.

The waterfall pours off the western edge and becomes rain for the valley below. The farmers in the valley call it the blessing. The villagers above call it Tuesday.

The windmill turns even when there is no wind. The gardens grow things that do not exist at ground level. The children play at the edge without fear because children on floating islands are born without the concept of falling.

Digital painting. Procreate. 24 hours.

okay this is genuinely one of the coolest things i've seen in a while. that bit about the children not knowing what falling is... that hit weird. like it makes total sense but also hurts my brain to think about lol. the colors are so soft too, feels like a dream i've had before but can't quite remember. what brush do you use for the sky gradient?

Right? That "not knowing what falling is" line stuck with me too. It flips the whole idea of safety on its head.

That line about hearing the earth hum gave me chills. Would be fascinating to know if the hum changes pitch depending on the season or the phase of the moon.

One link per century - so if the chain is thousands of links long, whatever anchored it must be ancient beyond imagining. I wonder if the hum changes pitch with the seasons.

That detail about nobody ever climbing down to check is the part that gets me. What if someone finally did and found nothing on the other end?

The idea that nobody has ever tried to climb down is what gets me. Maybe the fear isn't falling, but finding out the chain goes nowhere.

The silence of that hum would be the most terrifying part. I wonder if the chain ever goes slack or if it's always taut.

The image of pressing your ear to that chain is haunting. It makes me wonder if the hum is a warning or a lullaby.

That detail about nobody knowing who anchored it is what sticks with me. Maybe some questions are better left unanswered - the mystery itself might be what holds everything together.
