The biggest lesson therapy gave me was learning that boundaries are not rude. I used to think saying no meant I was letting people down or being selfish. My therapist had me practice by starting small, like telling a friend I couldn't talk on the phone because I needed time to myself. It felt awful at first. I remember apologizing too much, even for things like not wanting to lend out my car. Over time, I realized boundaries protect my energy and actually improve my relationships. People respected me more when I was honest about my limits. It's not about building walls, it's about knowing where I end and others begin. I still struggle sometimes, but now I catch myself when I start over-explaining a no. You don't have to justify a boundary. Just state it clearly and stick to it. That practical shift changed how I handle work, family, and friendships. It's not selfish to take care of yourself.
