STRING OF DISCORD
Beware, be aware
Of those around
Who appears to care
About your heartbeat’s sound—
That rhythm of friendship,
Of truthful fellowship,
Music played in orchestral harmony;
They are jovial, yet phoney.
The chords they strike are pitched in backbiting;
On their faces are smiles, but their minds are hating
The progress of our ties and unity—
They sever it with envy and enmity.
They join the circle, crossbreeding trust,
As if to remedy wrong, yet their notions are worse.
Their sole agenda is to see you all fall out;
So I tell myself—and you—gracefully watch out.
For when we don’t, deadly becomes the outcome;
We may never recover from what will come.
Let instinct guide us with precaution;
For their presence breeds distortion.
They come only to foster controversy,
Their hearts were coated thick with jealousy.
They delight in watching us act in violence,
Breaking omertà—the Sicilian code of silence—
By playing the string of discord;
It’s all their petty minds can afford.
