Signal Mountain is one of those places in Mauritius that rewards you differently depending on when you go. Most people hit it at sunset for the classic Port Louis skyline shot, which is beautiful, no doubt. But I actually prefer going just after sunrise on a weekday morning, around 7 or 8 AM. The light is softer, the heat hasn't hit yet, and you get this amazing contrast between the green slopes and the city waking up below. The air smells clean, and you can hear birds more than traffic.
One thing a lot of visitors miss is the short but steep trail that wraps around the back side of the mountain. It's a bit overgrown in parts, nothing crazy, but it adds maybe 20 minutes and gives you this incredible view of the harbor and the modern port cranes. Feels like you're seeing two different eras of Mauritius at once. I take my dog sometimes, and she loves scrambling on the old stonework near the historic signal station ruins near the top. Those ruins are a reminder that this spot wasn't just for tourists back in the day. The French and British both used it as a lookout point.
If you drive, park at the base near the old cemetery. The path is obvious, and it takes about 15 minutes to reach the top. Go slow, bring water, and don't just stand at the viewing platform. Walk around the whole summit. You'll find little pockets of quiet that most people miss. It's not a big mountain, but it punches above its weight for the experience.
