Poem Titled: "Where We Left Our Shadows"
In the village dust, where our laughter bloomed,
We left our shadows in the golden noon.
Barefooted, we raced through the whispering trees,
With hearts as wild as the summer breeze.
We tied our dreams to kites of straw,
And watched them soar beyond what we saw.
Our giggles were the rhythm, our hands the drum,
As the sun dipped low, we'd still run.
With hopscotch squares etched in the clay,
We danced through hours, forgetting the day.
Palm fronds for crowns, as we were kings and queens,
In our world of play, we lived unseen.
Splashing in streams, we shaped the sky,
With every wave, a new goodbye.
In field of grasses, our secrets lay,
Silent promises in the games we'd play.
Now we've grown, I can hear the echoes still,
Of childhood friends in the evening chill.
Where the wind carried our voices, soft and sweet,
In every breeze, I hear their feet.
Time may have pulled us from where we stand,
But we left our shadows, hand in hand.
Description:
This poem was inspired by the vivid memories of childhood playtime in African villages, where friendships were formed in the open fields and dusty roads. The innocence, freedom, and deep connection to nature fueled these moments of pure joy. The idea of leaving behind "shadows" represents the lasting impact of those early friendships and the way they linger in our hearts, even as we grow older and drift apart. The imagery of kites, hopscotch, and streams reflects the simple yet profound ways we shaped our world and carried those experiences into adulthood.
