NOSTALGIA
We sang,
We danced,
Under the moonlight.
The ten-ten game was our favorite.
Had us clapping
And yelling out numbers at the top of our voices.
The sweet aroma of our mamas’ foods,
Filled the air,
As they went about making dinner.
The orange glow of the sun,
Often served as our reminder,
To call it a day.
But we paid no attention to it.
We played,
Until our mothers called.
Hide and seek had us shivering with anxiety,
The hiders waiting anxiously,
The seekers searching frantically.
We played every game
Like our lives depended on it.
It was a competition, only there was no prize.
Other times, we tested our abominable culinary skills.
our main ingredients being sand, water
and some unholy green leaves.
Best friends then,
Strangers now,
Funny world.
The excitement, the thrill
The screams, the shouts
Wish we could go back.
But no, we cannot.
Live goes on
And so we must move on.
#AfricanChildhoodMemories. #ChildhoodinAfrica #Poetry
Childhood will forever be the most interesting part of growing up,especially in Africa. Nothing prepares you to become a child. You just quickly adapt to your environment and grow up learning about everything and everyone around you. You are quick to smile,to laugh and even cry. You literally have no control over your emotions as a child. But the moment you start growing up, you start learning how to become an adult, how to hide and control your emotions. You begin to learn that the world is not kind to anyone at all. Writing this poem made me reminisce on the good old times, when as a child I had absolutely no care in the world. Playing and rolling in the dust because you never had to do your laundry yourself. You never had to worry about what to cook or eat, because you had your parents or elder siblings thinking about that and handling it. I hope that as we grow up, we never lose our inner child and sometimes find the time to play again as we did when we were younger.
