Moved to the UK from India in early 2025, so here's my unfiltered take.
The biggest surprise for me was how much the "system" expects you to already know things. I thought the UK would be super organized, with everything clearly explained. But no. Tax codes, council tax bands, NHS registration, even how bin collection works in your specific street you're expected to figure out from a cryptic PDF or a neighbor if you're lucky. I spent my first two weeks just trying to understand what a "ground floor flat" actually means in practice (spoiler: it's not always on the ground, and sometimes it's a basement).
What really got me is the loneliness paradox. London has 9 million people, but I've had more meaningful small talk with the corner shop guy in Delhi than I've had here in three months. People are polite but closed off. Making real friends takes months of consistent effort, not just showing up to a pub.
Financially, the cost of living is brutal in ways the calculators don't show. The "rent" figure online is just the tip. Add council tax, water, internet, electricity, gas, TV license (yes, that's a thing), and suddenly your budget is shot. I'd recommend budgeting 30% more than you think you need for the first six months.
Overall, it's not bad, it's just different in ways you can't prepare for. If you're resilient and patient, it works. But if you're looking for a fairytale, stay home.
