Let me Out!

"Let me out of the house", is
a daily soliloquy of mine, a silent one
as I dare not scorn my shepherdess life
Oh only a decade ago, I swore
to the world that I could fly.
It was not strength that gave me speed
But carelessness, childish audacity.
We were scantily clad, bare feet
Chasing tyres, screaming-not singing-
Shamelessly tone deaf to the tune of
"Who is in the garden?" Or "Willie Willie"
We were the purity of the world and menaces to its residents, and
now that I am neither new born nor dead
I want the world to look upon me as it once did
-to run free, unpercieved, blessing the winds with naked skin.
To wake Africa to giggles and squeals
Untamed by society and responsibility
I want to relearn "tinko tinko"
And play it with the girls on hot evenings
I want to climb fruit trees, and fall, and cry, and bruise, and heal, and do it all again
just for the thrill
I want home to be a checkpoint ahead of new adventure
And not a cage where I lay, waiting to die
Let me out, once more, to be a child
