Fort James, located in Jamestown, Accra, is one of the oldest European-built structures in Ghana. Constructed by the British in 1673, it was originally established as a trading post but later became a significant center for the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were held in its dungeons before being transported across the Atlantic, marking the fort as a site of deep historical significance.

Unlike some of the well-preserved forts in Ghana, Fort James has seen years of neglect and deterioration. However, its imposing walls and remaining structures still hold echoes of its past. Walking through its grounds, visitors can see remnants of the colonial era, including prison cells that were later used during the British colonial rule to detain Ghanaian political activists. The fort was repurposed as a prison well into the 20th century, further adding layers to its historical narrative.

Today, Fort James stands as a testament to Accra’s rich history and the transformations it has undergone over the centuries. Although it is not fully restored as a museum, plans for conservation and tourism development continue. Its location in Jamestown, one of Accra’s oldest districts, makes it an essential stop for history enthusiasts and cultural explorers.

Proud to be part of such an old city, but saddened by its neglect. Still, the fort holds a deep history—definitely worth a visit if I get the chance. Let's hope they're working on restoring it as much as possible.
