I passed by a small food joint. A young man was on his phone, laughing and talking loudly.
“I love you with my whole heart,” he said. “You know I cannot breathe without you.”
The woman frying akara beside me rolled her eyes. “Hmm, Shina sha like to deceive this girl,” she muttered. “Is he not the one trying to toast another girl here few minutes ago?” We laughed quietly.
That incident got me thinking. Love is loud in words but stubborn in action.
We have mastered how to speak love yet we struggle with how to prove it.
I have seen people treat God the way some people treat relationships. All affection. No obedience. All sweet words. No submission. We sing to Him. We cry to Him. We write captions to Him. But when He asks for change, silence enters the room.
We say we love Him but argue with His instructions. We say He is first but give Him leftovers. We say He is everything but still negotiate obedience.
And the funny thing is this. We do not behave this way with people we truly respect.
If your landlord tells you to pay rent, you do not say, “He knows my heart.”
If your lecturer sets a deadline, you do not say, “I love you sir.”
If your boss gives instructions, you do not reply with songs.
But when it comes to God, we suddenly become poets.
I remembered a girl I once saw crying bitterly inside one of our lecture room. Few of her friends gathered around her. Someone asked what happened.
“He says he loves me,” she said between tears. “But he keeps hurting me.”
I'll tell you this for free, love that refuses correction is not love. It is attachment.
Love that avoids obedience is not intimacy. It is convenience.
