Isapa and Egusi

I was just a little girl,
barefoot on the kitchen floor,
watching Mama stir her pot,
with Isapa and Egusi, rich and bold,
a swirling dance, a story told.

The thick scent rose and wrapped around,
Isapa’s green, so wild and fresh,
mingling with Egusi, nutty and warm,
like sunshine caught in each golden speck.

The pounding yam beat like a drum,
while the soup, thick and strong, would bloom,
filling the air with the taste of home,
a world I’d know by scent alone.

Mama would call, and I'd race to her side,
my fingers dipping in, pure delight,
and with every taste, I’d feel her love,
in Isapa and Egusi, hot and bright.

Now, when I smell that blend again,
I’m back to being her little girl,
wrapped in flavors deep and sweet,
like hugs, like songs, like something whole.
