I’m a full stack dev based in Cape Town, and I’ll add something I haven’t seen in the replies yet: the local currency vs. remote currency angle is a huge factor in 2026. Companies hiring locally in Africa still pay in local currencies, and the gap is widening. I’ve talked to devs in Nigeria and Kenya who are turning down local offers because the pay doesn’t stretch as far as even a mid-tier remote gig in dollars or euros. But the catch is that remote roles are getting more competitive. You’re not just competing with other Africans you’re up against devs from India, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.

For the stack, I’m seeing a big push for Node.js and TypeScript on the backend, especially in startups that need to scale fast. React is still king on the frontend, but Next.js is taking over for teams that want SEO and SSR without extra complexity. Python is holding steady for data and AI roles, but for pure web dev, it’s less common. One thing that surprised me is the demand for AWS or cloud certifications. A lot of companies here don’t want to maintain servers, so if you know a bit of DevOps Terraform, Docker, or basic CI/CD you stand out.

My advice: don’t just focus on the stack. Build a portfolio that shows you can handle real-world problems, like performance optimization or security. And network hard. Most jobs I’ve gotten came from Twitter or local meetups, not job boards.

Hmm the currency thing really hits home. I'm in Joburg and it's crazy how even a junior remote gig paying $800/month changes your whole life compared to local salaries. But yeah remote market is brutal now... I spent like 6 months last year just trying to get my foot in the door. That DevOps advice is gold though, I started messing with Docker recently and suddenly recruiters actually reply lol
